CHAPTER 10

Sawyer and Neville left for Swift’s house while I stayed at Chophouse to help Julie and Rafael. I hadn’t realized how late it was until Julie interrupted our emergency meeting with the upsetting news about Meg.

The other council members offered to stay and offer assistance, but I encouraged them to go home and rest. I had a feeling we were going to need it in the coming days.

“Rafael and I spoke to the friends she was with, but they said she left in plenty of time to make curfew,” Julie explained. We sat at a table in the empty restaurant.

“Does she have a phone?”

“Not with her. You know Meg. I convinced her to have one, but half the time she leaves it at home so she can be present with her friends.” She used air quotes around the word ‘present.’

“Did her friends say where they were earlier tonight?”

“They were ice skating at the pond north of the river,” Julie replied.

“The one near the vortex?” I asked. The vortex wasn’t far from the mound, where the ley lines converged. Its intense power added to the supernatural magnetism of the town.

“That’s the one,” Rafael said.

“I’ll go there now and retrace her steps between there and your house.”

“Good idea,” Rafael said. “I’ll drive.”

Julie tapped her foot in a nervous gesture. “I can’t just sit here and wait. I’ll go insane.”

I looked at her. “There is another option.”

She stared back at me with big brown eyes. “What?”

“Shift. Try to track her in wolf form.” I’d considered asking Hugh to join the search party for that reason, but he was too drunk to be useful tonight.

Julie’s brow furrowed. “I have a counterpotion I can drink that would allow me to shift.”

Rafael jumped to his feet. “I store a bottle in the kitchen. I’ll get it.” The warlock dashed from the dining room.

“I really appreciate your help,” Julie said, her eyes glistening.

I clasped her hand across the table. “This is Meg. You know I’d do anything for her—and you.”

Julie sniffed. “I can’t believe this. I should have made her check in with me every hour. This never would’ve happened.”

I squeezed her hand. “You can’t know that. This isn’t your fault, Julie. You’re a great mom.”

Rafael returned with a shot glass brimming with orange liquid that looked like Gatorade. He set the glass in front of Julie. “Bottoms up, my darling.”

Julie held the glass to her lips. “Gods, I hate shifting. If this isn’t love, I don’t know what is.” She drank.

Rafael jingled his keys. “Let’s go. By the time we get there, the potion will have kicked in.”

The three of us piled into Rafael’s Audi and sped toward the pond. My phone buzzed with a call from Sawyer, and I snatched it to my ear.

“No one’s at the house,” Sawyer said. “No Swift. No Halsey. No goat. I can’t decide if that’s good or bad.”

“It’s bad,” I said. “Definitely bad.”

“That’s what Neville said too. Have you found Meg?”

“Not yet. We’re going to retrace her steps, and Julie is going to shift to track her scent.
